Alevkaya Herbarium

The most picturesque route for driving to the Alevkaya area is the road that turns to the left from Kyrenia to Famagusta mountain road at the Five Finger mountain pass. Alternatively it can be accessed from the north coast road by driving through the village of Karaagac and following the signs.
The Herbarium was founded in 1989 by the distinguished English Botanist Dr. Deryck Viney, and is housed in the main building of the Alevkaya Forestry Station. Listed are nearly 1250 flora specimens. There are photographs on display as well as preserved and pressed plant examples and anyone who is interested in the flora of North Cyprus should make a point of visiting this fascinating exhibition.
The Herbarium is open every day between 0800 and 1600.
There is a picnic area shaded by scented pine trees and a small restaurant that provides simple but delicious food.

Lavinia Neville Smith
Lavinia Neville Smith first came to North Cyprus in 1995, and fell in love with the country and the Turkish Cypriot people. A self confessed dilettante, with a varied working career, it was not until she returned in 1997 and went into tourism that she was able to put to good use her knowledge of history, ancient and modern, acquired long ago at school. She is a co-author of the Landmark Visitors Guide to North Cyprus, and continues to promote this beautiful country as far afield as possible.
